WAI STEM Pathways first Airborne Outreach takes off for Wycheproof Victoria

The WAI STEM Pathways Program is being pioneered by our very own Dr Zara “Zee” Dennis, fondly becoming known as the Flying Science Teacher. Having completed a few programs within Melbourne/Geelong in conjunction with Monash University, Zara is about to take-off on the first airborne outreach endeavour, to Wycheproof in North Central Victoria.

The small P-12 College provides an engaging and diverse education from Prep to Year 12 and has an enrolment base of approximately 120 students. Zara will be heading up in just over a weeks’ time, departing from Lilydale Flying School. The program to be delivered will see students in years 4 to 8 get hands-on in a range of informative, engaging and fun Aviation based classroom activities.

Finally seeing her airborne outreach idea take to the skies, around 18 months after the idea first formed, Zara hopes this marks the start of an adventure much bigger than the dreams of one person. Not every child will grow up to be an aspiring scientist, but to foster curiosity, inspire young minds to ask questions and to set out on a path of discovery, is a fundamental aspect of ensuring the future of scientific literacy in our society. In an ever-increasing global community, location should not be a limiting factor on the opportunity of curious young minds to share the inspiration and wonder of Science.
