The 10th and 11th of January saw the first Sci-Fly STEM Outreach programs for 2017 held at Lilydale Flying School in Victoria. Organised in conjunction with PrimeSCI! Science Eduction, the two “FlySCI!” programs have received some absolutely wonderful feedback from parents.
The first day had quite a small group, with PPL Pilot Zara Dennis running the classroom session, and RA Pilot Rita Setford taking the lead for the hanger tour. The participants in the engineering program were lucky enough to not only see the regular Lilydale aircraft close up, but also they were given the very special opportunity to take a firsthand look at a replica Mustang under construction, and meet the owner/builder.
The second day had a much larger number of students enrolled in the Aviation Science program, and to help out young CPL Student Scott Jessett joined the team, once again proving to be a wonderful role model to the students. Learning about the forces of flight through hands on activities, lead by Zara’s infectious teaching style and boundless love for the subject, this was the third run for this specific session – and judging by some of the feedback, the team really have got an inspirational little program up and running.
“Both my daughters came home yesterday raving about the day (and lots of show and tell!) – so much so, the eldest now wants to study Physics and become a Pilot!! Thank you so much for putting this on – it was a well loved event”.
‘Our kids absolutely loved the session and were beaming from ear to ear, they communicated with me detail upon detail about what they did, learnt, explored, saw, witnessed, exercised.’
‘She thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we are thrilled that it is on offer. Lilydale flying school is such a treasure, we wouldn’t have known that it was here unless we had participated. Now we are on the facebook page and look forward to the posts and annual events. Thank you so much!’
